A national grassroots fan campaign to persuade the NFL (National Football League) to invite multi-platinum and three-time Grammy award winner Michael W. Smith to perform at Super Bowl XXXIX was announced by Bob Williams of Jacksonville, Florida. Jacksonville is the host city for Super Bowl XXXIX to be held in 2005.
"Following the problems with the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show, the NFL is now primed to return to traditional entertainment that would be both entertaining and family-safe. Michael W. Smith would be a perfect addition to the next Super Bowl entertainment lineup. He has a variety of award-winning music that is entertaining, family-safe, and appealing to multi-generation audiences."
"Jacksonville has a rich military history, currently hosting two U.S. Navy bases. Michael W. Smith has music, such as 'There She Stands', that would blend wonderfully with a patriotic theme. He also has many other award-winning songs to his credit that would suit other themes of interest to a national or international audience. Michael W. Smith has also previously performed at Jacksonville's Alltel Stadium, site of the next Super Bowl."
"With album sales exceeding 10 million and numerous music industry awards, Michael W. Smith has a wealth of recognized and proven musical talent. He won a third Grammy award in February of this year."
